    GRAMMOFON-MISSIONEN
    Swedish Jesus Music Aesthetics 1960 - 1990
by Carl-Henrik Olsson and Stefan Kéry

This lavish coffee table book takes an in-depth visual look back at the amazing art and graphics of the so-called Swedish Gramophone Mission.

The book presents the largest collection of Swedish Christian records from the 1960s -1980s ever amassed featuring 777 record covers, many of them extraordinary and surreal private/custom pressings.

Jam packed with lots of interviews, liner-notes and previously unpublished photos describing both the success and tribulations of the mission in vivid detail.

This collection documents and celebrates the Swedish Jesus Pop movement and is a striking record of its execution, art, and music.

“...Praise the lord with blues and jazz and symphony orchestras, with negro spirituals and with Beethoven’s Fifth, with guitars and xylophones, praise him with gramophones and tape recorders...”

Includes a preface by Johan Kugelberg and additional interviews by Emil Karlsson.

about

The first wave of Christian pop music hit Sweden in the early 1960s and became a major cultural and musical turning point within the church. Before that, anything reminiscent of the sinful secular world had been kept at a distance and church music had been more traditional. As Christian music underwent this change, it meant a focus on the record market, among other things. Young people began to rebel and evangelize using pop, gospel, and rock music in the Christian communities.

On this compilation. which is a compliment and soundtrack to our book GRAMMOFON-MISSIONEN - Swedish Jesus Music Aesthetics, we’ve dug deep into this cultural parallel universe of, mostly, private press Swedish vinyl EPs from the 1960s-80s. William Booth's frequently quoted question "Why should the devil have all the best tunes?" may have fueled up the groups and artists represented here.

With a wide range of musical expressions - from moody garage rock and downer folk pop to power-up adult oriented rock and uplifting country and western - they express not only their affection for Jesus and timely social issues, still relevant today, but also an exuberant musical joy. Join the mission!
